MTV treated rt grrrl like a cuty ven of wch: dangero, but too ivolo to be taken serly.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>Rt grrrl, I was told, happened Seattle, Portland, Olympia, Washgton, D.C., and Mneapolis. Acrdg to the olr boys at my high school was a bunch of girls "sgg about their perds", and Birmgham punks were "too smart for that." Supposedly, a uple of rt grrrls had tied a boy to a tree and "sucked his dick till he started bleedg." I would pace my dorm room and image yellg his face, beratg him, he'd hang his head, knowg that he had wronged me. I'd scream that he was irrponsible, venereal, a teen angel. I didn’t know what venereal meant, but I assumed was a clear otment like Neospor. Likg a boy didn’t feel mastream, but didn’t feel punk eher.</p><p>For eight mut, the English rt grrrl band provid the dreamspe upon which my fantasi unfold. In my head I screamed at Aaron; on my stereo the band screamed at me. I was punk, I was fe, I was good.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>I need to hear more, but only Aaron uld tell me the band’s name. And now I was too embarrassed to ask.</p><hr/><p>On the last day of school, the kids packed dorm rooms. I stared out my wdow and watched the rs and tcks whizz along I-20. I picked up the phone and dialed six of the seven numbers and hung up. Fally, I lled.</p><p>Aaron’s ltle sister answered. She yelled his name. She yelled his name aga. Aaron said hello. I knotted the phone rd around my x fger and tried to act lm as he reced the track listg on this tape.</p><p>I’d fast-forward, ph play on my stereo, and Aaron would rattle off a band name—Unwound, The Dead Kennedys, Biki Kill. Soon we got off-topic. We talked about Kill Rock Stars, the Fugazi show Huntsville. We talked several more tim that summer. We still talk today.</p><p>"Oh, hey," he said. "I got to go. My mom needs the phone."</p><p>"Wa," I said. "Who do the spoken word track at the begng of Si B? "That’s Huggy Bear. They’re pretty much the bt band the world."</p><hr/><p>I orred <em>Takg the Rough Wh the Smooch</em> the next week at a lol rerd store. It took six weeks to arrive. I lled the store every other day. I beme known as "that Huggy Bear kid."</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>The vyl was so small! I envisned a triple LP op. The twelve songs lasted twenty-two mut. Every time I played , I’d close my door and put on my headphon. The mic was a secret.</p><p>By the time I’d disvered them, Huggy Bear had already broken up. I’d heard that they believed that all bands should break up wh three years, that they refed to have their photo taken. I don’t know if any of that’s te. But I do know that <em>Takg the Rough Wh the Smooch</em> meant a lot to my other queer punk iends who grew up like me, isolated plac like Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, and Missouri.</p><p>Huggy Bear did for me what no one else did that year—they listened. I shut my ey and thought about Aaron; Huggy Bear screamed and yelled and after the mic was over they whispered. They told me that somewhere, somewhere far away om Alabama, there were others the world like me. I’d jt moved out of my parents’ hoe Mobile, Alabama and all I knew about life was the mall, middle school, and MTV. <em>Let’s lynch the landlord</em>—ok! <em>Robert DeNiro, s on my face</em>—y! <em>We’re Biki Kill and we want revolutn. Girls don’t wahhhhhh</em>—Girls don’t what? Courtney Love had socked rt grrrl Kathleen Hanna the face at Lollapalooza. That’s how MTV’s Kurt Lor scribed her—"Rt Grrrl" Kathleen Hanna. MTV treated rt grrrl like a cuty ven of wch: dangero, but too ivolo to be taken serly.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>Rt grrrl, I was told, happened Seattle, Portland, Olympia, Washgton, D.C., and Mneapolis. Acrdg to the olr boys at my high school was a bunch of girls "sgg about their perds", and Birmgham punks were "too smart for that." Supposedly, a uple of rt grrrls had tied a boy to a tree and "sucked his dick till he started bleedg." I was to boys and girls. Art school should have been a mec of make outs, but the stunts were image nsc. Cool was more important than sex. Everyone wanted to be ol, but you uldn’t belong to more than one circle. You uldn’t smoke pot and listen to D.C. hardre. You uldn’t skateboard and get good gras. I would pace my dorm room and image yellg his face, beratg him, he'd hang his head, knowg that he had wronged me. I'd scream that he was irrponsible, venereal, a teen angel. I didn’t know what venereal meant, but I assumed was a clear otment like Neospor. Likg a boy didn’t feel mastream, but didn’t feel punk eher.</p><p>For eight mut, the English rt grrrl band provid the dreamspe upon which my fantasi unfold. In my head I screamed at Aaron; on my stereo the band screamed at me. I was punk, I was fe, I was good.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>I need to hear more, but only Aaron uld tell me the band’s name. And now I was too embarrassed to ask.</p><hr/><p>On the last day of school, the kids packed dorm rooms. I stared out my wdow and watched the rs and tcks whizz along I-20. I picked up the phone and dialed six of the seven numbers and hung up. Fally, I lled.</p><p>Aaron’s ltle sister answered. She yelled his name. She yelled his name aga. Aaron said hello. I knotted the phone rd around my x fger and tried to act lm as he reced the track listg on this tape.</p><p>I’d fast-forward, ph play on my stereo, and Aaron would rattle off a band name—Unwound, The Dead Kennedys, Biki Kill. Soon we got off-topic. We talked about Kill Rock Stars, the Fugazi show Huntsville. We talked several more tim that summer. We still talk today.</p><p>"Oh, hey," he said. "I got to go. My mom needs the phone."</p><p>"Wa," I said. "Who do the spoken word track at the begng of Si B? "That’s Huggy Bear. They’re pretty much the bt band the world."</p><hr/><p>I orred <em>Takg the Rough Wh the Smooch</em> the next week at a lol rerd store. It took six weeks to arrive. I lled the store every other day. I beme known as "that Huggy Bear kid."</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>The vyl was so small! I envisned a triple LP op. The twelve songs lasted twenty-two mut. Every time I played , I’d close my door and put on my headphon. The mic was a secret.</p><p>By the time I’d disvered them, Huggy Bear had already broken up. I’d heard that they believed that all bands should break up wh three years, that they refed to have their photo taken. I don’t know if any of that’s te. But I do know that <em>Takg the Rough Wh the Smooch</em> meant a lot to my other queer punk iends who grew up like me, isolated plac like Alabama, Kentucky, Arizona, and Missouri.</p><p>Huggy Bear did for me what no one else did that year—they listened. I shut my ey and thought about Aaron; Huggy Bear screamed and yelled and after the mic was over they whispered. They told me that somewhere, somewhere far away om Alabama, there were others the world like me.
