It’s the strange legacy of a man who, for a brief perd, stood astri the world as a rock in who bristled wh sexual charisma, yet never que performed the role of a sex god. Yet those ntradictns are what lends Freddie his odd afterlife; for straight people, ’s a disorientg rercement of the gay man as genr viant and sexual predator, while for many gay people, well, there’s somethg tacky, embarrassg, somethg played out about Freddie Mercury. Te, ’s a tegory error to thk that gay men ever bee gay ins themselv: that’s a posn generally rerved for women. Yet, at a certa pot his life, Freddie was probably the most famo leatherman the world, and at the centre of a cuttg-edge gay sex subculture that ntu to fascate and rm gay culture today. But Freddie? Not so much. His absence om a gay nostalgia that touch on so many parts of his life is strikg.</span></p><p><span>This September would have marked Freddie’s 75th birthday. As a teenager, I had a poster of Mercury on my wall, a after he died. Yet by that pot I rarely listened to them, and today, never. It took me by surprise, then, to feel eply moved when I watched </span><em>Bohemian Rhapsody</em><span>, the recent bpic of Freddie’s life wh </span><em>Queen</em><span>. Specifilly, I was moved to fury. It felt disgtg to watch, as though watchg I was somehow plic the way this story was beg told. </span></p><p>I clearly felt eper about the subject than I had realised. What was missg the way Freddie is today picted? Why, throughout my life, have I kept returng to Freddie Mercury, as a performer, as a gay man, and why, thirty years after his ath, is his strangens, his performance, his sexualy, his genr, more tertg to me than ever? And why do so few other gay men seem to feel the same? Why is he remembered, or rather fotten, the way that he is? Iologilly, he is owned through his associatn wh </span><em>Queen</em><span>, whose emergence wh the notorly macho fanbase of classic rock survived Freddie’s flamboyance om the start of their reer, and won them a legn of rock fans. </span><em>Queen</em><span> may always have been an anomaly wh that scene, able to swch between pop, rock, and metal registers, but their roots rema wh a mic that was built for straight guys, a scene that often betrayed an assertive anti-queer, anti-black reactn, typified the </span><a href=" rel>“Dis Sucks” attu of the late 70s.</a><span> Freddie was always a rock star, not a pop star, and for years, ler not for </span><em>Queen </em><span>albums clud the proud disclaimer: </span><em>No Synths!</em><span> While milly </span><em>Queen</em><span> would not be unshaped by Freddie’s enunters wh dis, ’s as a rock band that they built and mataed their fanbase.</span></p><p><span>Furthermore, his legacy is still lerally ntrolled by straight men; after Freddie died, the band ntued, and ntu to this day, existg as a sort of tribute band to self. As well as new albums released and remastered g prevly unreleased Freddie vols, the band (m John Dean) has also built a new reer on top of their historic legacy, wh a live stadium show that ntu to draw vast crowds and is onted by a strg of alternative Mercury replacements, notably Pl Rodgers and Adam Lambert. As well as the live show and albums, the band’s anchise has extend across platforms, cludg an ill-fated early vio game, </span><em>Queen: The eYe</em><span>, meos on </span><em>X Factor </em><span>and the Olympics Openg Ceremony 2012, a </span><em>Queen</em><span> Wt End Mil, and even a </span><em>Queen </em><span>ballet. Some people will see such shg- as a distasteful abe of Freddie’s memory, out of tune wh his stage performance, which relied so much on his idsyncratic and unreproduble personal charisma; realy, shg was </span><em>always</em><span> the Queen story, om their soundtrack albums to their unapologetilly crowd-pleasg stadium anthems, to their notor breakg of the South Ain anti-apartheid cultural boytt wh their Sun Cy shows. </span></p><p>I’m neher fan nor hater enough to be particularly exercised by this project to squeeze every last pound om the brand, but ’s an tertg example how the management and ntrol of already existg tellectual property, and the right to explo s rewards, ntu to misshape our cultural landspe. His replacement, Ben Whishaw, also qu after allegedly disagreeg wh the directn of the script. The urge to maximise potential prof wh a lower certifitn, and to give the film the broast possible appeal, produced a film which ntued down the long tradn of tellg a straight story about Freddie, pecially regardg his sexualy. It was to this prelapsarian paradise that homosexualy emerged, first stroyg his relatnship wh the woman who would have been his wife, and then almost stroyg the rock. In this story, Freddie’s same-sex sire leads him to a scent to the herworld, where he is transformed by sodomy. When he re-emerg, penent and blkg to the world, he brgs wh him some great creative secret that transforms him, and the band. But he nnot go unpunished; this story (and remas a mon one), guilt is the natural bedmate of homosexualy, and AIDS is picted as a metaphor for that guilt, the price of allowg yourself to be led astray.</p><p><span>It’s a terrible, reactnary, 1980s approach to both his creativy and towards homosexualy, yet </span><em>Bohemian Rhapsody</em><span> followed this narrative closely. Perhaps the most tertg scene is the one which Freddie, played by Rami Malek, </span><a href=" rel>que lerally scends to the dark gay sex clubs of New York</a><span>, plac which are picted as threateng, aggrsive lairs of male sexualy, forebodg, wh the threat of sexual vlence or pravy jt unr the surface. It draws s fluenc om William Freidk’s eply ntroversial, homophobic, but good, film </span><em>Cisg</em><span>, which a serial killer stalks New York’s gay BDSM scene; dark shots of Freddie walkg through clubs pulse wh hoe and dis mic, enraptured by his own sirabily to the men he enunters. Shots of the band rehearsg their 1980 h </span><em>Another B the Dt</em><span> mix wh montag of leather daddi leadg men masks through the heavg, sweaty crowds. This much is te; om the pot Mercury me out to himself and startg visg gay clubs, he phed Queen’s output a very different directn om the hard rock they had ma their name wh; as Roger Taylor says the film “We’re a rock and roll band. We don’t do dis.” </p><p><span>The fluence wasn’t entirely appreciated by their fans. Their dis-fed 1982 album </span><em>Hot Space</em><span> was one of their least popular, even if had been spired by their huge 1980 h </span><em>Another One B the Dt</em><span>. At the same time, Freddie’s image changed. The flamboyant 1970s rock god look of legggs, p and long hair was replaced by a neat crop, big motache and tight nim and leather around 1978. To anyone on the gay scene at the time, mt have been immediately obv that Freddie was fay; the look is a perfect reprentatn of the hyper-mascule “Castro Clone” look that domated urban gay centr the late 1970s and early 80s. The look is so qutsentially the gay look of s time that you mt wonr how anyone mataed the fictn that he was ever heterosexual, yet that’s the benef of a hdsight that Mercury created; for many straight people the look beme associated as the pantomime gay “look” precisely bee they later associated wh Freddie who, jt a day before his ath, announced he was HIV posive and th implicly beme one of the most famo gay men Bra. Many others still mata the fictn; as a teenager I rell a nversatn wh one of my mother’s rers who swore bld that his homosexualy was an vented slanr after his ath, and that he was a straight man. </span></p><p>In all the reprentatns, queer culture, gay male culture, is an external world to which Freddie ventured, or was lured. His abily to rist is picted as his Achill’ Heel, the fatal flaw that every geni has. His late g out has perhaps perpetuated that story among gay people, too, as though he was eply ashamed of his sexual orientatn. This seems an unnecsarily unsympathetic read, as though the verbal claratn of homosexualy is the start and end of a publicly queer life. Asked about his sexualy later life, the Mexin pop in and heartthrob Juan Gabriel, another man who phed the boundari of a wordls queerns, would rpond "Lo que se ve no se pregunta" -- “What n be seen don’t have to be asked.” Freddie’s late ‘70s transformatn seems to me not so much an Orphean scent to the homosexual herworld, as a flourishg embrace of the creative life that homosexual iends, and homosex, gave him. Compare the stttg peackery of his mid ‘</span><a href=" rel>70s Top of the Pops performance of </a><em><a href=" rel>Killer Queen</a></em><span> - a mo that uld be shared by any number of straight performers, om Mick Jagger to Rod Stewart - wh his mid 80s Live Aid performance. Somethg has been unleashed; a fist-pumpg, legs astri, arse-slappg physil masculy, bed wh an engagement wir queer mil fluenc. Don’t the homosexual libertage unleashed by the sex clubs - the bondage, the gangbangs, the dgs and the boys - actually mark a moment of creative awakeng? Didn’t the libidal power of the late 70s New York gay scene produce a burst of self-nfince the performer that powered the band through the creative low pots of the followg ?</span></p><p>The sad song told about Freddie’s libido life New York’s gay unrground seems somethg superimposed om outsi, and retroactively. It is likely that durg this time, Mercury beme HIV posive, and ’s around this fact that, my opn, much of the difficulty people have asssg his legacy occurs. As late as 2018 the book “Somebody to Love” told a dual bgraphy of both Mercury and the HIV vis, a chapter at a time, creatg the rear the sense of an imment fate as the stori move closer and closer to the pot at which they jo: New York the late 70s and early 80s. Troublgly, the story beg told this manner creat a sense of evabily towards Freddie’s sickns, somethg hard to disassociate om blame, as if, years before people were first regnised to be dyg om AIDS, he should somehow have known such a thg was possible. </p><p><a href=" rel>Blame ntu to float around his memory;</a><span> his ath rest as a sort of llective tragedy for everyone else, and the specifici of his own life and ath too lite to discs. Homosexualy is st as his hubristic flaw, the moment he phed his sir for rock hedonism too far; ed, sometim feels as though some </span><em>Queen</em><span> fans feel homosexualy stole Freddie om them, and robbed them on his future mic. His late, clone image beme libly associated wh his sexualy and his HIV stat. Furthermore, Freddie’s ath 1991 was marked as the first ath of a major rock star om AIDS, and as such was, for many people outsi of margalised muni affected by HIV, the first person they knew, they red for, who had died of the disease. That was plited; some of those people didn’t know he was gay, others loved him spe the fact, others knew but didn’t re. Sympathy and grief were sometim mixed wh fear and disgt.</p><p><span>That is their bs. But why do he still hold such an ambivalent posn the mds of gay men? I spect upon his ath, there was rentment om more explicly out gay men that he hadn’t been more public, more vol, both about this sexualy and his HIV stat at a time when both gay people and HIV posive people were subject to an ternatnal hate mpaign. For others, his mic was what alienated them, ftg as did to a much more mastream, popular and rock world than many equented. What seems strange to me, however, is how his life the late 70s and early 80s is still so tranged om a wir unrstandg of the man. At the time, he was equentg some of the most tertg and excg gay clubs New York, and engagg era-fg sex cultur. He was a regular at The Anvil, whose fistg shows and ccifixns ma notor, and where </span><em>Cisg</em><span> was filmed. There is plenty to terrogate there, of urse, but for now, I simply wonr why, when we list off the clientele of the Mhaft, we see s importance the cultural life of Robert Mapplethorpe, Annie Sprkl or Michel Fouult, but not Freddie Mercury? This aspect of his life may be nfg, alienatg, or rented by a wir straight dience, and liable to be downplayed or monised by those who still prof off the band’s straight fanbase. But Mercury’s absence om a gay non n’t be put down entirely to that. We are missg a trick refg to regnise that sexualy was neher a dirty secret to Mercury, nor a distractn om his reer, but rather that his engagement leather and sex clubs were a moment that revolutnised his life, openg him up to wir cultural fluenc, and cultg him such a powerful, self-nfint sexual persona that meant that even the pths of the homophobic 80s, one of the biggt, most popular artists the world was ck-grabbg, fist-pumpg gay leatherman.
