And then we moved to New Hampshire, which is where I kd of thk of myself as beg Enni: That is a cent amount of movg Comstock-Gay: Yeah, is.

And kd of related to that, I want to ask about how readg and wrg was a part of growg up for Comstock-Gay: Oh yeah.

Claire Comstock-Gay: You know, really was not, even a ltle b. Claire Comstock-Gay: Yeah, you know, 's funny, I was really to keepg a journal as a kid. I didn't want to be looked Enni: Well, teenage poetry is the epic, I thk nnects all of Comstock-Gay: [Lghs] And so I never, like llege I studied Rsian Lerature, but I never took a creative wrg class, even though I was kd of startg to secretly wre fictn at that pot.

Claire Comstock-Gay: It was poetry and fictn.

CLAIRE COMSTOCK-GAY

I had a secret poetry live journal for a long time [lghg] Enni: Ooh, Comstock-Gay: And so I wasn't ever dog wh the thought that I would maybe even ever Enni: I'm so terted that bee, what's clear to me om readg your horosp onle and then om readg this book, is that you're a really gifted wrer.

Claire Comstock-Gay: I thk was partly not fdg the right form. Or, I don't know, like nyg the creative urge some way, shape, or Comstock-Gay: I thk was partly fear and weirdly, like a twisted up kd of way, partly rebellns.

I don't thk we were raised wh a lot of msag of acceptg Comstock-Gay: Yeah, I really agree. I want to kd of shift to talkg about how you started wrg Comstock-Gay: It really kd of was jt me gettg tremendoly lucky and fallg to this.

It wh baked stcture and also a really hard and fast Comstock-Gay: Y. " And kd of ma me thk about havg to wre somethg every week is a great way to sort of lose some of that precns that might prevent you om wrg or publishg Comstock-Gay: Totally. I mean, I would argue, I gus that this kd of uld be seen as takg the place of Comstock-Gay: Enni: Even though 's not explicly wrg about your life, 's fely a reflectn of your worldview and exprsg your terpretatn of humany.

And that's a great way to journal general, I would Comstock-Gay: Enni: I want to ask about that learng on the job. Claire Comstock-Gay: So was really jt a lot of readg whatever I uld fd.

But yeah, approachg om a narrative way is so different and unrreprented, like you're Comstock-Gay: Yeah, yeah.

And also jt your nceptn of an dience, or how you thk about your wrg, all that good Comstock-Gay: Kd of where to start wh the qutn of dience. It really is all about figurg out ways to nnect and to offer this gift to Enni: And your name, of urse, is obvly on the book and on The Cut, and everywhere that people read your horosp, but you are Madame Comstock-Gay: [Chuckl] Enni: So you did kd of totally move towards elimatg your inty wh relatnship to your wrg this tertg Comstock-Gay: Yeah, and has been funny to have my name kd of slowly, my real name, slowly creep . Claire Comstock-Gay: Yeah.
