Yet, their reputatn as one of the most novative and excg groups of gospel mic’s “goln age” rts largely on the dozen songs Mildred, Evelyn and Geralde Gay rerd durg three ssns between March and July of 1951 for Savoy Rerds.
Fannie Lewis and Jerry Gay were married Atlanta 1922 and later moved to Chigo, where they raised five children: Evelyn, Robert, Mildred, Geralde and Donald. Both parents and four of their offsprg—wh the notable exceptn of Robert, who beme a jazz mician—performed om time to time wh the fay group, which was billed varly as “The Gay Sgers, ” “The Gay Sisters wh Fanny [sic] Gay and Preacher Gay, ” “Evelyn Gay & the Gay Sisters, ” “Evelyn Gay & Brother” and “The Gay Sisters wh Donald Gay. The Gay fay attend All Natns Pentestal Church on Chigo’s Wt Si, where the pastor was Elr Lucy Smh, grandmother of future Roberta Mart Sgers pianist Ltle Lucy Smh.
Followg Elr Smh’s ath 1952, the Gays joed the Church of God Christ nomatn. Volist Mildred and sger–pianist Evelyn Gay formed the Gay Sisters as duo 1946 and were equently joed over the years by Geralde, also a pianist.
