He's done que a b else, like some tly amazg genealogy work rng his own clan, which was trmatized and broken up by the Holot, and is also perhaps the world's biggt and most fluential </span><em>Dr. Who </em><span>fan.</span></p><p>Even before Ian was at Heaven the 1980s, he learned to DJ as part of the early-70s Brish Northern Soul scene—a i I've always been obssed wh, which workg-class maly straight kids the dtrial north of England would get high off their face on speed and dance huge clubs to sped-up obscure sub-Motown 1960s Amerin soul rerds. (I've always thought would make an amazg movie.) </p><p><span>So when someone suggted I reach out to Ian to terview him, I knew we'd have some shared passns, as I ed to DJ myself and am a huge history of every sgle phase of dance-mic and DJ history—pecially the gay aspects. Ian, who suffered a stroke a while back and now needs a lot of help his daily life, was grac to accept my terview requt and give me the time, but I'll be hont— was a very tough terview. He talked over nearly all of my qutns and, pecially toward the end of the terview, volved to basilly ignorg me pletely and DJ'g </span><em>at me</em><span> whatever song popped to his md. We really start to fall apart toward the end and talk about why he might have such a hard time havg a te back-and-forth wh another person. It might have been the first time I, and not the terviewee, end a Caftan terview, at about the 90-mute mark. And I did so bee I had not a drop of energy left me to try to have a real nversatn wh him.</span></p><p><span>Still, I'm grateful he agreed to do , as I'm grateful to every one of my Caftan terviewe regardls of how good the terview is. Can you scribe your hoe?</p><p>Ian: It's two huge three-story ho knocked together. It's got 25 rooms, a lot of which are storage for my rerds and equipment. The hoekeeper's dghter liv here and Aidy liv here part time. I had a stroke ne years ago that pletely disabled me. I live about four or five rooms. They all hoe my master tap and rerdgs and rerds. I have 150,000 vyl sgl. I've got 2,000 tap I've rerd over the years. I have four whe Eskimo sled dogs—Colombo, Madison, Myla and Bobby—and a whe t named Tamla, like Berry Gordy's label that merged to Motown 1960. I actually don't own this hoe anymore, I sold , but I have the right to live until the day I die.</p><p>Tim: Okay, ol. What is a typil day for you like?</p><p>Ian: I don't ever wake up before 10am. Someone has to drs me bee I n't e my left hand or left leg. I spend most of the day on my puter. We put a lot of rerds out on vyl. We have a stud set up here the hoe.</p><p>Tim: Where you—remix tracks?</p><p>Ian: Remixg is the wrong word. I'll ll -mixg. We try to make thgs sound more sixti and ls morn. All the 80s and 90s shty electronic dms, which I hate, we replace wh real dm sounds. My most succsful tracks ever were "So Many Men, So Ltle Time" and "High Energy." But my taste is soul mic, not dis remix. I remixed half the hs of the 80s—the Pet Shop Boys, Bananarama, Erasure, Bronski Beat, Tiffany. But after that I got back to Northern Soul aga. My fans who love dis don't unrstand, but I crge when I listen to a lot of dis and dance mic.</p><p>Tim: Really? Why?</p><p>Ian: Bee 's too gay. It's pigeon-holed. I prefer Motown—betiful, uptempo, joyo melodi and chords, proper three-mute songs. The dis and dance stuff I ed to remix had a three-mute tro before you even heard the sger. I did that for the Heaven dance floor. I should say I love Motown too. But why for you?</p><p><span>Ian: That beat! The fact that the lyrics uld be like "My world is so empty whout you," but the mic was so happy and fast. The Four Tops, "</span><a href=" rel>Sce You've Been Gone</a><span>"—the vibraphone hs you wh the beat and the bass le is the precsor of dis and Hi-NRG. I had dner wh [Motown h wrer] Lamont Dozier [who </span><a href=" rel>jt died </a><span>last summer] once and he said, "I took a rock and roll beat and mixed wh jazz chords, and that was the Motown sound." They took very sophited chords, nths and gmented thirteenths, and put them to a straightforward four-four beat and ma them the sound of the Baby Boom Generatn.</span></p><p>Tim: Why do you thk on a personal level you were so drawn to Motown?</p><p><span>Ian: I don't know—I'm not a psychiatrist. So I was DJ'g at </span><a href=" rel>Blackpool Mec</a><span> by the time I was 17, 1970. We were playg Motown-type rerds that were already five or six years old, by obscure artists. But no, was a very straight, macho scene.</span></p><p>Tim: When did you first realize you were gay or had gay feelgs?</p><p><span>Ian: I tried to supprs until I was 25.
