S. Elt's sex life. Do we really want to go there? It is a sad and solate place. Elt was twenty-six and, almost certaly, a trated virg when, 1915, he married Vivienne Haigh-Wood, an Englishwoman he had known for three months. Haigh-Wood was a medilly and emotnally vexed person. Her troubl clud irregular and equent menstatn, migra, nralgia, panic attacks, and, eventually, addictn to her meditn, particularly to ether. She was pretty, amb, and (on her better days) vivac. Elt was handsome, amb, and the oppose of vivac. "Exquise and listls," Bertrand Rsell scribed him when he met the Elts for dner two weeks after the marriage. "She says she married him orr to stimulate him, but fds she n't do . Obvly he married orr to be stimulated. I thk she will soon be tired of him."</p><p class="paywall">Rsell was rrect to tu a tensn. The Elts seem to have disvered that they were sexually patible almost immediately. Mrs. Elt reacted by havg an affair wh Rsell, which her hband eher tacly ndoned or was remarkably obte about. (Rsell was a sexual predator who permted himself to bee temporarily fatuated wh the women he sced. He pretend, by way of self-jtifitn, to believe that his timacy wh Vivienne provid a form of maral therapy to the Elts.)</p><p class="paywall">Elt's own medil and emotnal ndn was not exactly robt, and he was quickly worn down by the mands of rg for Vivienne. He was also a man whose sense of propriety was sometim distguishable om squeamishns. He told his iends the Woolfs that he uld not image shavg his wife's prence. He and Vivienne slept separate rooms. She baed him ont of guts; he often rpond by clg to rpond; and (although is impossible to be sure) they seem to have been, for much of their marriage, sexually tranged. It was Elt's character to nvert misfortune to fate, and he eventually unrtook to normalize the abnormaly. In 1927, he was nfirmed to the Church of England, which ma divorce sentially impossible; 1928, he took a vow of chasty.</p><p class="paywall">Four years later, Elt went to the Uned Stat to teach and lecture, leavg Vivienne England. While he was away, he had his solicors send her a letter announcg his tentn to separate, and when he returned, after a year, he went to hidg. If he imaged that a clean break would help Vivienne get over him faster, he mislculated badly. The separatn unhged her. She stalked her hband, now a famo man, for five years. She was never able to fd out where he lived, and he ed to slip out the back of the office at Faber & Faber, where he was an edor, whenever she showed up askg for him. (The receptnist was on stctns to give him a special rg.) Most of the iends Vivienne had ma through her marriage abandoned her, and her behavr grew creasgly bizarre. In 1934, she joed the Brish Unn of Fascists; she liked to wear the uniform public. In 1938, her brother, Mrice, had her mted to an asylum. She died there 1947, at the age of fifty-eight, possibly om a liberate overdose.</p><p class="paywall">Elt had meanwhile renewed his acquatance wh an Amerin woman named Ey Hale, whom he had been love wh when he was a stunt at Harvard. At the time, she had cled to reciprote his affectns; now, an unmarried drama teacher at Scripps College, she found that her reasons for difference had bee ls prsg. She voted herself to Elt. Durg the neteen-thirti, she equently spent the summer England wh him. Their relatns were platonic. Hale was a proper Boston lady; Elt's Bloomsbury iends found her hioly dull. "That <em>awful</em> Amerin woman Miss Hale," Ottole Morrell plaed. "She is like a sergeant major, que tolerable. However Tom tak her about everywhere." Hale plaly believed that she was first le to bee the next Mrs. Elt. But when Vivienne died Elt told Hale that although he loved her, was not, as she reported to a iend, " the way ual to men ls gifted i.e. wh plete love thro' a married relatnship." Hale was fifty-five. She cid to settle for plete love through an unmarried relatnship.</p><p class="paywall">Elt had acquired another admirer, an Englishwoman named Mary Trevelyan. Their relatnship, too, was asexual; apparently to disurage illns of timacy, Elt ma a le that they uld not de together on nsecutive nights. They were iends for twenty years, durg which Trevelyan proposed three tim. Elt murred: after Vivienne, he explaed, the ia of livg wh someone was a "nightmare." Then, 1957, at the age of sixty-eight, and whout notifyg Hale or Trevelyan, Elt married his thirty-year-old secretary, Valerie Fletcher. Elt and Mary Trevelyan stopped speakg to one another; Ey Hale had a nervo breakdown and end up Massachetts General Hospal. Elt was happy his send marriage, which seems to have been a se of plete love of the married type. ("There was nothg wrong wh Tom, if that's your implitn," Valerie Elt once told an terviewer who asked why Elt's first marriage had been a failure.) Elt died 1965; Valerie Elt is still alive. She is her hband's lerary executor and, thanks to "Cats," a very wealthy woman.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">This may seem a limed range of sexual experience for a poet much of whose work is preoccupied wh sex and sexualy. But E. M. Forster had published three novels before he had any clear ia of what the sex act nsisted , and Henry Jam, as far as we know, never had a sexual relatnship (of the "plete" type, anyway) wh anyone. S. Elt, and the Long-Supprsed Tth About Her Influence on His Geni" (Doubleday; $35). Seymour-Jon sists on readg Elt's poetry as a leral report on his personal tast and experienc. Elt vented characters who were sexually passive (J. Aled Pock), sexually predatory (Mr. Apollax, a character molled on Rsell), sexually mercenary (the young man rbuncular, "The Waste Land"), sexually louche (Mr. Silvero, of the rsg hands, "Gerontn"), sexually vlent (Sweeney), and sexually discrimate (Columbo, the seri of privately circulated ribald vers, of a socially unreemg explicns that would almost make a rapper blh, entled "Kg Bolo and His Big Black Kween"). The sex Elt's poetry is almost always bad sex, eher libidally limp or morally vic. But that's bee for Elt bad sex was the symptom of a failure of civilizatn, and is a fallacy to nclu that, bee sex his poems is disgtg, Elt was disgted by sex. Elt was disgted by morn life, perd. That he found a way to exprs that disgt through lurid sexual characterizatn was one of the reasons his poetry seemed, s time, so pellg.</p><p class="paywall">"Pated Shadow" draws on Vivienne Elt's papers, which she left to the Bodleian Library, at Oxford. Copyright on that material is claimed by Valerie Elt, but Seymour-Jon was given permissn to quote om whout rtrictn, and her book is filled wh h tails. Although her sympathi lie entirely wh Vivienne, she clears Elt of most of the nastier suatns of Michael Hastgs's play "Tom and Viv," which was first performed 1984, and ma to a movie, wh Willem Dafoe and Miranda Richardson, ten years later. Hastgs got his rmatn about the marriage largely om an terview wh Mrice Haigh-Wood, 1980, when Haigh-Wood, wh his sister and his distguished brother--law no longer around, felt that was safe to st events a light favorable to himself. Haigh-Wood was not liberately ceful; he jt felt guilty about what had happened to his sister, and he implied that he and Elt had plotted to get her out of the way by havg her voluntarily mted. Seymour-Jon mak clear that Elt had nothg to do wh Vivienne's mtal—Mrice arranged —and that, whether or not Vivienne was clilly sane, she had bee, by 1938, a danger to herself. The police found her wanrg the streets of London at five the morng; when Mrice arrived to get her, she asked him if was te that Elt had been behead.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">Still, "Pated Shadow" do not really challenge the standard view of Vivienne Elt as an unhappy woman who ma Elt unhappy but gave him (as Yeats said of the spirs) metaphors for poetry. Contrary to the book's subtle, the tth of Vivienne Elt's fluence on her hband's geni has not been long supprsed, bee, apart om the emotnal agatn, which is acknowledged by nearly every mentator and by Elt himself, her fluence was not pecially notable. Vivienne read Elt's drafts; she ntributed, unr psdonyms, satiril poems, stori, and reviews to the journal he eded, <em>The Crern</em>, whose name she had supplied; and she believed his geni. Elt admired her wrg and valued her advice. He sometim adapted l she had wrten for his own poems. (He also adapted l om Dante, Shakpeare, and dozens of other wrers.) He was proud of her lerary abili, and although he plaed termably about their health and their fanc, he do not seem to have cricized her to their iends or to his fay.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">But why did he marry her? Why, after their patibily had bee obv, did he stay wh her for eighteen years? And why, after her ath, did he wa ten years before marryg aga? Seymour-Jon has a theory. She believ that Elt was gay, and that he led a "secret life." He married Vivienne (acrdg to this theory) a sperate attempt to "normalize" himself, and he stayed married partly out of fear that, knowg the tth about his sexualy, she would expose him and e a sndal. He separated om her orr to pursue relatnships wh men; he ed Ey Hale and Mary Trevelyan as beards; and old age, sufferg om emphysema, he married, effect, a nurse. And this brgs to the first most exasperatg thg about Seymour-Jon's book, which is not her theory but her plete abily to prove .</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">It is certaly possible that Elt had homosexual feelgs. He might have had exclively homosexual feelgs (which is what Seymour-Jon apparently believ); he might have had bisexual feelgs; he might have had homosexual feelgs that he reprsed, or that he felt ashamed of or guilty about. He might have had homoerotic enunters, and he might even have had homosexual experienc (which Seymour-Jon has nvced herself he did). The trouble is that the evince available to tablish any of the thgs is hopelsly nclive.</p><p class="paywall">The claim that homosexualy is the "key" to unrstandg Elt is not new, but before "Pated Shadow" (and apart om some speculative remarks, of the raised-eyebrow variety, a few memoirs) the argument was ma almost entirely om the poetry. In 1952, a young Canadian profsor, John Peter, published an article the amic journal <em>Essays Cricism</em> which he terpreted "The Waste Land" as an elegy for a ad male beloved. (Among other evince, Peter claimed to have found allns to sodomy the poem.) In 1952, imagative terpretatns of "The Waste Land" were already a dime a dozen. But, when Peter's say me to Elt's attentn, Elt had his solicors send the journal a letter which they reported their client's "amazement and disgt," and strongly implied that he would sue for libel if the article ntued to be dissemated. Peter, much abashed, sent Elt an apology, and the article was purged om a later prtg of that number of <em>Essays Cricism</em>. In 1969, though, four years after Elt's ath, Peter reprted , the same journal, and add a postscript which he intified the beloved as a young man Elt had known Paris, Jean Vernal. And 1977 Jam E. Miller, Jr., enuraged by Peter's article, published a book-length terpretatn, "T. S. Elt's Personal Waste Land," voted to what would now be lled "queerg" the poem. It was an energetic and somewhat reee performance. Miller explaed the speech of the hyacth girl, for example—" 'You gave me hyacths first a year ago; / They lled me the hyacth girl' "—by suggtg that the l are spoken by a man, and should be read wh a kd of cross-drsed suggtivens: " 'They lled me the hyacth <em>girl!</em>' "</p><p class="paywall">It might seem that Elt's reactn to Peter's origal article betrays him, but Elt had threatened before to sue a publitn that had prted rmatn about his private life. He was a buttoned-up man (to put dly), and he didn't enjoy seeg personal thgs wrten about him any more than anyone else do. His supprsn of Peter's article don't mean that Peter was wrong, but don't mean that Peter was right, eher. This is unrstandable, sce there is no other plsible known ndidate for a male love-object Elt's bgraphy. Vernal was a French medil stunt whom Elt met Paris, where he was spendg a year on his own, 1910. They board at the same pensn, and beme panns. That year Paris was spiratnal for Elt: he got terted the philosophy of Henri Bergson, which was an fluence on many of his early poems, cludg "The Love Song of J. Aled Pock," fished 1911; and he was troduced to the reactnary cultural and polil ias of the Actn Française, which fluenced both his poetry and his social cricism. He romanticized the year, and Vernal was part of the memory.</p><p class="paywall">One reason Vernal acquired this importance, though, was that after that year he and Elt never saw each other aga. They exchanged some letters, and then Vernal enlisted the Army as a medil officer. He was killed, 1915, at Gallipoli. When Elt published his first book of poems, "Pock and Other Observatns," 1917, he dited to Vernal, "<em>mort x Dardanell</em>." Elt seems to have believed that Vernal drowned (he did not), and this has given support to the intifitn of the drowned sailor Phlebas the Phoenician, "The Waste Land" ("Consir Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you"), wh Vernal.</p><p class="paywall">It is fair to assume that Elt felt a close attachment to Vernal, and that he mourned his ath. Elt's letters to Vernal are lost, but we have Vernal's to Elt (or some of them; is possible, of urse, that Elt stroyed others), and there is nothg them to suggt an unual timacy. They show Vernal to be, like Elt at that age, a high-md, philosophil young man wh an enthiasm for French poetry and for Wagner. It is possible that, Elt's md, he reprented a love that dared not clare self; but is certa that he reprented the flower of the European civilizatn that the First World War stroyed. And that is why is legimate to image him as the real-life figure behd Phlebas "The Waste Land." Whatever personal mons drove Elt to pose , "The Waste Land" is a poem about the war, jt as "Women Love" and "To the Lighthoe" and "In Our Time" are books about the war and the way of life the war put an end to.</p><p class="paywall">Seymour-Jon plac Elt the pany of a number of homosexual men at var pots his life, but Elt associated as a matter of urse wh wrers and artists who were homosexual or bisexual: Lytton Strachey, Maynard Keyn, Serge Diaghilev, Osbert Swell, Virgia Woolf, Djuna Barn, Gert Ste, Geofey Faber, W. H. Aun. Homosexualy was jt part of the world he worked , which mak even harr to unrstand why, if he did have affairs wh men, he went to such pas to rema closeted. In 1933, searchg for a place to hi om Vivienne, Elt spent a short time livg a flat wh three gay men. Seymour-Jon suggts that he went cisg at night, but the evince for this is a remark, many years later, by one of the flatmat: "Well, he would hardly have spent that perd livg wh if he had not had <em>some</em> leangs, now would he?" This seems rather th rroboratn.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Sometime 1934, Elt left the flat and went to live Kensgton a rectory n by a Father Eric Cheetham. Seymour-Jon says, "Tom and Eric Cheetham lived together for six years." This is a ltle misleadg. Elt paid rent on his rooms at the rectory, and, while Cheetham ate wh the other prits who lived there, Elt ually went out for dner. Begng 1937, Elt and Cheetham did share a flat near the rectory, but 1940 Elt left and moved wh a fay outsi London. After the war, he lived, until his marriage to Valerie, wh John Hayward, a sgle man who was nfed to a wheelchair by mcular dystrophy, and who was pleased to scribe himself as "the most un-homosexual man London." Much of Elt's rrponnce remas unpublished; some of —cludg a thoand letters to Ey Hale—is still sequtered. But Seymour-Jon has not found anythg potg unambiguoly to a homosexual relatnship Elt's life, and we n feel nfint that she has nducted a thorough search.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">"She has an origal md," Elt once wrote to a iend about Vivienne, "and I nsir not at all a feme one." Like other recent mentators on Elt's wrg, Seymour-Jon is que right to intify a misogynistic tenncy. Elt's attu toward women had the same source as his attu toward Jews: the reactnary program of the Actn Française (which had also attracted the tert of Jean Vernal). The Actn Française was, origally, an anti-Dreyfard polil movement; s lear, Charl Mrras, ascribed what he regard as the cle of France to the fluence of women and Jews, whom he held rponsible for the rptns of dividualism, romanticism, sensualy, and irratnalism. Elt was a ser admirer of Mrras's book "L'Avenir l'Intelligence," which he read durg his year Paris, and, later on, of Julien Benda's tract "Belphégor," which was published 1918, and which attribut the y of French culture to (ahead of other unsirabl) women wrers and Jewish philosophers. This is why the alleged un-femy of his wife's md was, for Elt, a pot of pri.</p><p class="paywall">In the poetry, this attu toward the female md is exprsed as a horror of female sexualy. The poetry Elt wrote between 1918 and 1922 is populated by oversexed female characters: Grishk ("The sleek Brazilian jaguar / Do not s arboreal gloom / Distil so rank a fele smell / As Grishk a drawg-room"); Prcs Volupe (who "extends / A meagre, blue-nailed, phthisic hand / To climb the waterstair. Lights, lights, / She entertas Sir Ferdand / Kle"); the Jewish prostute Rachel née Rabovch (who "tears at the grap wh murro paws"); the sexually negligent typist ("Her bra allows one half-formed thought to pass: / 'Well now that's done: and I'm glad 's over' "); and the vampirish woman who "drew her long black hair out tight," "The Waste Land." It is temptg (and Seymour-Jon, naturally, succumbs to the temptatn) to rive the figur om Vivienne. But Elt's nceptn of women as civilizatn's succubae predated his marriage.</p><p class="paywall">Possibly sex is the wrong ame for unrstandg that marriage anyway. Tom and Vivienne had a life together, after all. They went dancg and listened to mic, and they shared an tert ntemporary art and lerature. Elt thought that Vivienne had rcued him om a borg life as an Amerin philosophy profsor, which is what his fay wanted for him. He realized very quickly that he had married an valid, and for many years he was mted to her re. He nursed Vivienne, he searched out special treatments for her, and he etted ntually, and somewhat nrotilly, about providg fancially for her. She nursed him, too. In the end, he was overmatched: he didn't have the temperament—he was too absorbed by the fascatns of his own prsn and self-loathg—to sta the necsary votn.</p><p class="paywall">And votn, not merely sexual satisfactn, was what Vivienne sired. Elt's sertn shattered her, bee, spe her crazs and her tntg, she worshipped him. She ed to leave her ont door unlocked every night between ten-thirty and eleven, se he cid to return. Her stalkg was not aggrsive; was pathetic. She imaged that her hband had been taken away by people who didn't re for him and would stroy him. She did not mean to be a harpy, and he did not mean to be a bte. Those were jt the forms their unhapps had to take.</p><p class="paywall">In 1935, Vivienne managed to track her hband down at a book fair, where she had learned that he was schled to give a talk. She wore her Fascist uniform and rried, her arms, three of Elt's books and their terrier, Polly. As the dience was gettg seated, she turned and saw that Elt was right behd her, on his way to the lectern. She rerd the moment her diary:</p><p class="paywall">**<em>{: one} ** I turned a face to him of such joy that no-one that great crowd uld have had one moment's doubt. I jt said, Oh <em>Tom</em>, & he seized my hand, & said how do you <em>do</em>, que a loud voice. He walked straight on to the platform then & gave a most remarkably <em>clever</em>, well thought out lecture. . . . I stood the whole time, holdg Polly <em>up</em> high my arms. Polly was very exced & wild. I kept my ey on Tom's face the whole time, & I kept noddg my head at him, & makg enuragg signs. He looked a <em>ltle</em> olr, more mature & smart, much <em>thner</em> & <em>not</em> well or robt or mbt at <em>all</em>. No sign of a woman's <em>re</em> about him. No sy evengs wh dogs and gramophon I should say. **</em></p><p class="paywall">After the lecture, she went onstage and stood next to him while he signed pi of his books. "I said quietly, Will you e back wh me?" "I nnot talk to you now," Elt replied. He signed the books she had brought wh her, and then he left.
