Our next door neighbors were a queer uple. People never treated them differently <em>explicly</em>, but there was always that fear, like “don’t get too close, you don’t want that bbg off on your kids,” or whatever... That’s how people talked about queerns back then.</p><p>But then you turn on the TV, and all of the sudn, there’s this fabulo person — I’d never seen anyone before who looked like that. He was happy, powerful, and succsful. But most of all, he was <em>loved</em>. My fay loved him.</p><p>I remember he looked the way I felt. He was different. And I knew I was different too.</p><p>Those five-mute appotment viewgs were sacred, quiet tim. And I thought, if my fay uld love him the way they did, then they uld love me.</p><p><strong>Did gettg to know Walter change your perceptn of him?</strong></p><p>We me thkg the Walter we saw on TV was jt a persona. But at one pot, his niece said, “you don’t get . The person you see is who he <em>always</em> is. Sce childhood.” We realized this was 100% te.</p><p>Walter’s grand nephew had a baby durg productn. They brought the baby to the hoe, but Walter refed to meet them until he’d done his hair and makp. He didn’t want the baby to see him not at his bt. He always wanted to look the way he felt si.</p><p>He knew his appearance drew people . And by dog so, he uld teach you. It was subversive and brilliant. We took for granted how brilliant he was. He uld talk to you about history, relign, astrology, film. He and I veloped a film shorthand, quotg talki. Once he said, “I want to be alone...”, a famo Greta Garbo le, and no one else got !
