I was still workg wh rappers but I started gettg to , playg all the shows and travelg the world—thgs I never thought I’d be able to do. One day h me like, “What is the mic I really wanna make?” I unrstood how I got there and was great but [I had to ask myself] ten years, what did I want to be known for? Why so secretive this stance?</div><p>I didn’t even send my manager or my bt iends the entire rerd before me out. The way Vce mov and the way the project was shapg up, was all happeng so perfectly and I didn’t want to jx anythg or give anyone any sort of heads up. There’s certa stuff that I love to preview and get out there. I thk ’s really important to give people a ph on the ter. Like, you n show the label Ri Nasty gettg 40,000 retweets on a snippet of her dancg my stud. They’ll be like, “OK, we need to drop this now.” For someone like Vce, he’s really got ironed out and I wanted to keep secret and when h ’d speak for self.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">What’s different about workg wh someone like Vce Stapl, who already has a massive dience, vers some of the up-and-g rappers you produce for?</div><p>For me, ’s about ctom tailorg. Wh Vce, he me and took a bunch of beats I’d ma for random stuff, but we didn’t start gettg the bt rerds on the project until I started specifilly makg thgs that he was explag to me. The scriptors he gave me weren’t vague at all, so I had an ia of where to go wh . My favore songs that we ma were all oked up on spec, and that, to me, is why the project feels the way that feels. People will go through 50 beats om a producer and pick the bt on, go make a song on that beat. That’s ol, but someone g to me and hearg what I’ve been workg on, pickg out piec of all of that, and then addg some of their own ias is way more excg. Now, they’re gettg the exact nvas they want. They’re not tryg to f what they’re hearg to what the producer has already ma. It’s now about workg together and creatg this new thg that we’re both imagg but don’t yet exist. If you’re jt siftg through somebody’s 50 beats you won’t ever get a rerd like that.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">You mentned that you like to discs songs and albums wh rappers before you start workg. What ias did you and Vce discs before rerdg <em>FM!</em> together?</div><p>At first, I had no ia that he was workg on a project. I had never met him before. As soon as we met up, I wasn’t really askg qutns, I was more ggg where he was at right then terms of mic. I played him some stuff I’d been workg on, stmentals I hoped would get him exced. We started gog through specific kds of vib and slowly started takg this shape. It wasn’t really me specifilly sayg, “Oh, I wanna give him this kd of beat,” was more Vce dictatg the tempo and feel and me reactg. There was an arc to everythg he asked me to do when I went to his stud. He always hears the fished versn of his work and I’m jt tryg to f wh that. I jt wanted to give him the bt versns of all the different stuff he was lookg for.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">Do you ever send beats to artists or are your llaboratns always person?</div><p>Short of a Kanye suatn where their schle is impossible, or if I need to start workg wh a kid <em>right now</em> and I n’t make to where they’re livg—those are the only two exceptns. I get h up all the time om every verified rapper wh 1,000,000 followers like, “Yo bro! You got the sce right now. Send me beats!” Naw, that tak everythg away om what I do. As soon as I n’t be that room and have an opn, I n’t change the reverb on your vols … I’m not forfeg that. Even if my favore rapper lls and asks for a pack, I’d rather take that h right now—even if that would have been a check or a big opportuny, bee I know six months I’ve got a full project wh someone like Vce Stapl g out and you’re gonna <em>see</em> the difference. You’re gonna know my worth. Gag a uple of followers or a uple of bucks don’t do sh. Me showg that I have different piec wh a Ri, a KEY!, a Freddie [Gibbs], you n feel the difference wh me and their favore artists. That’s my goal as a producer. I thk that should be every producer’s role. I’m not a beatmaker.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">How did you select the artists you wanted work wh for your return to hip-hop productn? Did you have a specific type of artist md?</div><p>The plan wasn’t to try to go for big placements and the biggt rappers. My plan was to work wh people I uld tly grow wh and people whose mic I tly loved. Every time I’m workg on somethg, I’m extremely exced about . Opportuni e up and thgs happen, and you’re a room and you’re like, “This is gonna be dope for me,” but you’re there and you’re not exced. You’re jt gog through the motns. It’s jt another placement, another check. But when I’m the stud wh Ri, or KEY!, or JPEG, or 03 Greedo or Vce—any of them—I uldn’t be more exced bee I’m makg my favore song for the rt of the week. Before I ever met Ri Nasty, I would listen to “Hey Arnold” the r wh every girl I knew and be like, “Have you heard this song?” It jt feels like such a female anthem to me. That was my favore song and now I’m makg my favore songs wh her. That’s what I’m tryg to do. Especially wh me g back to rap mic after not havg done for a long time, I don’t thk ’s gonna have any long-lastg impact if I’m jt tryg to get beats to Migos, Travis Stt, and Drake. [I ask myself] “Who are the people I really like but aren’t gettg a fair shake? Who n I take and show people that ’s the bt thg out?” I’m jt tryg to make my favore songs, my bt iends are my barometer. I keep htg on the ltle thgs happeng rap, and I wanna be part of the ltle niche movements and do as thentilly as possible. It’s never about the check. The way Vce mov and the way the project was shapg up, was all happeng so perfectly and I didn’t want to jx anythg or give anyone any sort of heads up. There’s certa stuff that I love to preview and get out there. I thk ’s really important to give people a ph on the ter. Like, you n show the label Ri Nasty gettg 40,000 retweets on a snippet of her dancg my stud. They’ll be like, “OK, we need to drop this now.” For someone like Vce, he’s really got ironed out and I wanted to keep secret and when h ’d speak for self.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">What’s different about workg wh someone like Vce Stapl, who already has a massive dience, vers some of the up-and-g rappers you produce for?</div><p>For me, ’s about ctom tailorg. Wh Vce, he me and took a bunch of beats I’d ma for random stuff, but we didn’t start gettg the bt rerds on the project until I started specifilly makg thgs that he was explag to me. The scriptors he gave me weren’t vague at all, so I had an ia of where to go wh . My favore songs that we ma were all oked up on spec, and that, to me, is why the project feels the way that feels. People will go through 50 beats om a producer and pick the bt on, go make a song on that beat. That’s ol, but someone g to me and hearg what I’ve been workg on, pickg out piec of all of that, and then addg some of their own ias is way more excg. Now, they’re gettg the exact nvas they want. They’re not tryg to f what they’re hearg to what the producer has already ma. It’s now about workg together and creatg this new thg that we’re both imagg but don’t yet exist. If you’re jt siftg through somebody’s 50 beats you won’t ever get a rerd like that.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">You mentned that you like to discs songs and albums wh rappers before you start workg. What ias did you and Vce discs before rerdg <em>FM!</em> together?</div><p>At first, I had no ia that he was workg on a project. I had never met him before. As soon as we met up, I wasn’t really askg qutns, I was more ggg where he was at right then terms of mic. I played him some stuff I’d been workg on, stmentals I hoped would get him exced. We started gog through specific kds of vib and slowly started takg this shape. It wasn’t really me specifilly sayg, “Oh, I wanna give him this kd of beat,” was more Vce dictatg the tempo and feel and me reactg. There was an arc to everythg he asked me to do when I went to his stud. He always hears the fished versn of his work and I’m jt tryg to f wh that. I jt wanted to give him the bt versns of all the different stuff he was lookg for.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">Do you ever send beats to artists or are your llaboratns always person?</div><p>Short of a Kanye suatn where their schle is impossible, or if I need to start workg wh a kid <em>right now</em> and I n’t make to where they’re livg—those are the only two exceptns. I get h up all the time om every verified rapper wh 1,000,000 followers like, “Yo bro! You got the sce right now. Send me beats!” Naw, that tak everythg away om what I do. As soon as I n’t be that room and have an opn, I n’t change the reverb on your vols … I’m not forfeg that. Even if my favore rapper lls and asks for a pack, I’d rather take that h right now—even if that would have been a check or a big opportuny, bee I know six months I’ve got a full project wh someone like Vce Stapl g out and you’re gonna <em>see</em> the difference. You’re gonna know my worth. Gag a uple of followers or a uple of bucks don’t do sh. Me showg that I have different piec wh a Ri, a KEY!, a Freddie [Gibbs], you n feel the difference wh me and their favore artists. That’s my goal as a producer. I thk that should be every producer’s role. I’m not a beatmaker.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">How did you select the artists you wanted work wh for your return to hip-hop productn? Did you have a specific type of artist md?</div><p>The plan wasn’t to try to go for big placements and the biggt rappers. My plan was to work wh people I uld tly grow wh and people whose mic I tly loved. Every time I’m workg on somethg, I’m extremely exced about . Opportuni e up and thgs happen, and you’re a room and you’re like, “This is gonna be dope for me,” but you’re there and you’re not exced. You’re jt gog through the motns. It’s jt another placement, another check. But when I’m the stud wh Ri, or KEY!, or JPEG, or 03 Greedo or Vce—any of them—I uldn’t be more exced bee I’m makg my favore song for the rt of the week. Before I ever met Ri Nasty, I would listen to “Hey Arnold” the r wh every girl I knew and be like, “Have you heard this song?” It jt feels like such a female anthem to me. That was my favore song and now I’m makg my favore songs wh her. That’s what I’m tryg to do. Especially wh me g back to rap mic after not havg done for a long time, I don’t thk ’s gonna have any long-lastg impact if I’m jt tryg to get beats to Migos, Travis Stt, and Drake. I jt really try to get people exced however I n. I refe to fight somebody or re-do a beat that’s [based on] a classic sample. I refe to style jock.
