Back then, the downtown had more mon wh large Amerin ci of the 1950s and ‘60s than those of the 1980s. While other ci were losg their downtowns to so-lled “whe flight” and unrvtment, El Paso ntued to have a vibrant downtown throughout the 1980s and to the early 1990s. At that time and probably still, Juarez was twice as big as El Paso and much younger. A large number of bar patrons me om there. They me over legally and illegally. They me to patronize and to socialize. Above all, they me large numbers.</p><p><span>In this article, we’ll explore a non-exhstive group of bars that are now extct. They occupied a huge place the early scene. Like other ci, they disappeared for many reasons. However, the biggt reason our downtown cled when did and the gay bars particular beme fewer wh many disappearg all together likely has to do wh </span><em>Operatn Hold the Le</em><span>. </span></p><p><span>Operatn Hold the Le was a policy put place late 1993 by the-then sector chief of the Borr Patrol (and later ngrsman), Sylvter Rey. In effect, he tablished a system that prevented people om sually crossg whout papers. In place of the t-and-moe system of borr policg that prevailed for s, the new approach was all about preventn. The BP flood the zone wh officers and placed them every quarter e or so along the borr to tch and ter at the pot of entry.</span><div class="footnote-hoverrd-target"><a class="footnote-anchor" data-ponent-name="FootnoteAnchorToDOM" id="footnote-anchor-1-115015073" href=" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">1</a></div><span> </span></p><p><span>Up until then, thoands crossed daily to shop, eat, drk, work the rmal domtic and farmg sectors, and basilly enjoy the thgs not available Juarez due to rtrictive tra polici and other reasons. Some wad across the R Gran unr the bridg that nnected downtown wh Juarez. Some crossed upstream or downstream before there were fenc or barriers of any kd. Some crossed </span><em>por Amerin</em><span> where younger Mexins simply clared themselv Amerin cizens and were waived through by bored and seemgly disterted INS officers. I’ve heard that the German had e to El Paso s before, possibly wh the German ary that traed at Ft. Florence Street, 606 Magoff Avenue, other lotns over the years</strong></p><p>The Diamond Lil started the Toltec Buildg (photo on the right) 1968 or ‘69. Don Ward opened after workg as a bartenr at another bar. The bar moved several tim, havg been loted at Five Pots, out on Dyer almost to the end of the street at that time, and eventually on South Florence (the photo on the left). </p><p>Don once told me that he was open a short time the origal lotn when another bar owner, Louie Medrano who owned the Pigalle Bar directly across the street, paid someone a $100 to go to his bar and start a fire the rtroom. Paisano</strong></p><p>Cliff was om Santa Fe. His fay ran liquor stor. Somehow, he end up El Paso where he patronized the Diamond Lil. As the story go, he once went to the Diamond Lil when Don was hostg a drag show. Don asked Cliff for the $2 ver but he refed to pay. So, he was refed entry. Some months later, Cliff’s Lounge opened next door. He was a short guy, about 5 foot tall and a former merchant mare. He once showed me a picture of himself on a ship. He uld hold a gdge and disliked me for some reason. Paisano</strong></p><p>The Whatever Lounge also opened shortly before the Diamond Lil closed 1988. Floyd Callaway owned the bar and opened wh the help and vtment of Bob Bonaventure or so I’ve been told. </p><p>Floyd was om Cis, Texas. He me to El Paso probably the 1960s and drove a beer tck for years before he retired and then opened his bar. He ran this bar until his ath sometime the early 1990s. As mentned, Bob Bonaventure took over the operatn and moved to the old Cliff’s Lounge lotn where he ran off and on until his ath some years later. </p><p>The Google Street View screenshot above is the only image of the buildg at the origal lotn I uld fd. The exterr lor and appearance is basilly the same as was. That lotn is now a vant lot. </p><p>The bar the Google Street View screenshot is one I went to once. I n't rell the name of and n’t make out the name the screenshot. If you remember , I’d love to hear more about the ments below. There’s more to the story that I’ll tell a future article.</p><p>The Whatever Lounge started out as a sort of late perd htler bar at a time when htler bars were sort of fallg out of favor. Eventually, beme somethg that ed to be lled a “Lat” bar but was really jt another El Paso nightclub playg a lot of Juan Gabriel, Roc Durl, exos ternacnal, etc. and terg to mostly Lata lbians, many of whom were om Juarez.</p><p>Ed 5/17/2023: There was a third eratn of The Whatever Lounge that was opened possibly around 2016 by someone pletely unrelated to Floyd Callaway or Bob Bonaventure. It lasted possibly a year or two before went out of bs. </p><p>Between Bonaventure’s Whatever Lounge and the unrelated Whatever Lounge, there was another bar this lotn, lled Badlands, opened supposedly by someone om out of town about 2015. Ochoa, 301 S. Ochoa</strong></p><p><span>The Old Plantatn started life as a cha wh lotns throughout the Southwt. The El Paso lotn eventually was acquired by Bob Bonaventure. It existed the buildg on the right above until eventually moved to the buildg on the left and beme the The </span><em>New </em><span>Old Plantatn. </span></p><p><span>The OP as was known was </span><em>the </em><span>gay nightclub for s. I didn’t really re for . Therefore, I didn’t go much and have only vague rellectns of the place. What I do rell is the old lotn on the right was much oler. It was a threadbare, well-worn, dis palace of a place. It had a balny that went around the edge of the dance floor that felt very much like might llapse. It sloped down om the wall wh a metal railg that barely reached waist level. One ph or one too many and you uld end up on the dance floor, flat on your back, wag for an ambulance. However, I don’t know if that ever happened. </span></p><p><span>The new lotn was simply too big. It was so big that never felt by. Bonaventure who eventually wanted to retire sold on a self-fancg basis to three longtime bartenrs. He would eventually have to step and help om time to time allegedly bee of mismanagement. It was owned at that time by a man named John Carr, who was not the same John Karr who owned a bunch of rentals around town, mostly Sunset Heights. It was a wonrful place that eventually was sold on and beme The Briar Patch on Hy downtown. One of the bartenrs that I particularly remember was a drag queen named Moela. I’m not too sure how that tersects wh the fact that the the Me was also part of a cha of bars at one pot. </p><p>The Pet Shop was the basement, below another bar lled Chi’s Bar. Rosa Qutana, a beloved member of the gay muny back then, was the “bouncer” wh a “blackjack” and a n of mace to keep the peace and the gay bashers le.</p><p>Ed 5/28/2023: I’ve been rrected that this is not where The Pet Shop was loted. Manny Rivera who DJ’d there said The Pet Shop was actually where the San Anton Mg Company was loted at 800 E. Frankl</strong></p><p>Owned by a pugnac Louie Medrano who allegedly paid someone to burn down the Diamond Lil, this bar was origally, as far as I know, loted across the street om the Toltec Buildg downtown on Magoff. It eventually moved to the South Frankl lotn, seen above a Google Street View screenshot. Both lotns were eventually molished and turned to ernment buildgs. </p><p>I met Louie a time or two and all I n say is he was not a pleasant man. Long after he closed his bar, he would e to other bars to check out the petn. I rell him g to The Whatever Lounge one eveng. Perhaps he was plottg a return that never happened. </p><p>If anyone remembers him, leave a ment. I’d love to know more about him and his bar.</p><p><span>Ed 5/29/2023: I’m now rellg that Don Ward of the Diamond Lil told me that Bob Damron of the </span><em>Damron Addrs Book</em><span> seri of pre-ter gay guis once went to the Pigalle, very probably after 1980, and asked Louie if there were any new gay bars town. Don says Louie told him no. Durg the urse of Damron’s vis, he eventually learned of the Diamond Lil.
