D. Salger’s first novel, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Catcher the Rye</a>,” which has been published by Ltle, Brown and chosen by the Book-of-the-Month Club, refers to himself as an illerate, but he <em>is</em> a rear. One of the tts to which he puts the books he reads is whether he feels like llg the thor up. He is exced about a book by Isak Den and feels like llg her up. He would like to ll up Rg Lardner, but an olr brother has told him Lardner is ad. He thks “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Of Human Bondage</a>” is pretty good, but he has no impulse to put a ll to Mgham. He would like to ll up Thomas Hardy, bee he has a nice feelg about Etacia Vye. (Nobody, evintly, has told him the sad news about Hardy.) Mr. Salger himself pass his unorthodox lerary tt wh flyg lors; this rear would certaly like to ll <em>him</em> up.</p><p class="paywall">Mr. Salger’s brilliant, funny, meangful novel is wrten the first person. Holn Clfield is ma to tell his own story, his own strange idm. Holn is not a normal boy. He is hypersensive and hyper-imagative (perhaps the are synonymo). He is double-md. He is exorably self-cril; at var tim, he refers to himself as yellow, as a terrible liar, a madman, a moron. He is driven crazy by “phons,” a headg unr which he loosely lumps not only scery but snobbery, jtice, llons to the tears thgs, and a lot more. He is a prodig worrier. (“When I really worry about somethg, I don’t jt fool around. I even have to go to the bathroom when I worry about somethg. Only, I don’t go. I’m too worried to go.”) He is moved to py unnscnably often. He has few fens. For example, he is driven antic by a scrawled obsceny some vandal has chalked on the wall of his ten-year-old sister Phoebe’s school. Grown men sometim fd the emblazoned obsceni of life too much for them, and leave this world roly, so the fact that a sixteen-year-old boy is overwhelmed should not be surprisg. When another boy steals his glov, Holn n’t jt go up to the boy’s room, acce him of stealg his glov, and h him the jaw. He is sred by what he imag the culpr’s face will look like while his jaw is beg molished. (“I n’t stand lookg at the other guy’s face, is my trouble. It wouldn’t be so bad if you uld both be bldfold or somethg.”) He is also worried by the lack of an acute sense of ownership; he didn’t really re about losg the glov the first place.</p><p class="paywall">The book vers Holn’s last day at Pencey, a fashnable prep school, om which he has flunked out, and the followg two days, which he spends hidg New York Cy. Stradlater, Holn’s roommate, is handsome, gross, and a succsful amorist. On Holn’s last night at school, a Saturday night, he is a enzy of jealoy bee Stradlater has dated up Jane Gallagher, wh whom Holn is love. The hero and heroe of this novel, Holn’s ad brother Allie and Jane Gallagher, never appear , but as they are always Holn’s nscns, together wh his sister Phoebe—the three nstute his emotnal ame of reference—the rear knows them better, fally, than the characters Holn enunters, who are, except for Phoebe, margal. It is characteristic of Holn that although he is crazy about Jane, always thkg of her, always wantg to ll her up, he never do ll her up. He is always about to but don’t, bee he’s never “ the mood.” (“You really have to be the mood for that stuff.”) Perhaps he means that circumstanc and his feelgs are always too chaotic at the particular moment—that he wants to appear before Jane when everythg is orr and he is ntrol of himself. Or perhaps he wish to keep his memory of Jane vlate and nsecrated, like his memory of Allie; perhaps he is aaid of fdg her nocence tarnished—not a sexual sense, bee eventually he is sure that Stradlater didn’t “get to first base wh her,” but simply of fdg her no longer what she was, possibly fdg that she has bee, short, a phony. He keeps llg up a girl named Sally Hay, whose manift phons giv him “a royal pa,” but he wr that off as the overhead of sex. He didn’t get sore about —he never got sore about anythg—but I keep thkg about anyway, when I get very prsed.</p></div></blockquote><p class="paywall">Holn is always regrettg that you didn’t know Allie. “You’d have liked him,” he keeps sayg: the human impulse to make a silent voice dible to others, a lost sence palpable.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">By the time Stradlater returns om his date wh Jane, Holn is sure that he has slept wh her, and Stradlater helps him to thk so, whout beg actually ddish. Stradlater asks for the posn; he is fur when he reads , bee is about a baseball glove rather than a room or a hoe. Holn tears the posn up. He has a fight wh Stradlater and gets a bloody nose. Shortly after that, he cis he n’t stay another mute Pencey and will go to New York, though his parents don’t expect him until Wednday.</p><p class="paywall">Holn go to say goodbye to Mr. Spencer, his nice old history teacher. It worri the boy that while his teacher is sayg edifyg valedictory thgs to him, he be acutely ncerned about the wter quarters of the ducks the Central Park lagoon. (“I was wonrg if [the lagoon] would be ozen over when I got home, and if was, where did the ducks go. I was wonrg where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and ozen over. I wonred if some guy me a tck and took them away to a zoo or somethg. Or if they jt flew away.”) This worry about the ducks stays wh Holn all through his adventur New York. On his send night, he has an irristible impulse to go to Central Park and see what the ducks are dog. In his avidy to fd them, he pok the grass around the lagoon, to see if they are sleepg there, and nearly falls the water. No ducks. Begng to shiver, he is sure he is gog to die of pnmonia, and he cis to sneak to his parents’ apartment to see Phoebe once more before he di.</p><p class="paywall">This Phoebe is one of the most exquisely created and engagg children any novel. She is herself a prolific novelist, who is not terred om startg a new book merely bee she hasn’t fished the last one. They are all about an attractive girl tective named Hazle Weatherfield. Hazle’s father is “a tall attractive gentleman about 20 years of age.” When Holn tipto to Phoebe’s, room, she is asleep. As befs an thor, Phoebe has numberls notebooks. Before Holn wak Phoebe, he has a look at her notebooks and her schoolbooks. Phoebe’s middle name is Josephe, but Holn fds “Phoebe Weatherfield Clfield 4B-1” wrten on the flyleaf of her “Arhmetic Is Fun!” Phoebe keeps changg her middle name, acrdg to price. In a ltle list of variatns, Holn fds “Phoebe Weatherfield Clfield, Esq.” “Kids’ notebooks kill me,” Holn says. He vours Phoebe’s.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Holn wak Phoebe. The moment she opens her ey, she wants to know whether Holn has received her letter announcg that she is gog to appear a school play, “A Christmas Pageant for Amerins.” “It stks but I’m Benedict Arnold,” she tells him excedly. “I have practilly the biggt part.” Then, after her theatril excement simmers down, she remembers that Holn wasn’t expected home until Wednday, and she learns that he has been kicked out of school. She hs him wh her fist. “Daddy’ll <em>kill</em> you!” she cri. Holn lights a cigarette and tri to expla, but n’t get much further than sayg that the school was full of phoni and they prsed him. “You don’t like <em>any</em>thg that’s happeng,” she says. This accatn, which Holn regniz that there is a fundamental tth, also prs him. He tri sperately to jtify himself. He enumerat thgs and people he do like—his brother Allie, for stance. Phoebe repli sagely that is easy to like people who are Heaven. Holn, miserable, nnot marshal all his lik. There was, he remembers, a ail boy who was so bullied by some thug schoolmat that he jumped out of a wdow to pe them. A teacher, Mr. Antoli, picked the boy up and put his own at around him—“He didn’t even give a damn if his at got all bloody”—and for this teacher Holn has always had a special feelg. Near Phoebe, Holn begs to feel better. They turn on the rad and dance. Holn’s parents e back om a late party, and Holn his a closet. Phoebe, to allay her mother’s spicns, says she has been smokg. Then, when Holn is about to leave, she giv him her Christmas money. It’s partly te, he adms, but not all te, bee “sometim I act a lot olr than I am—I really do—but people never notice .” The perpetual sistenc of Holn’s—“I really am,” “I really do,” “It really do”—after he has explicly said somethg, reveal his age, even when he is thkg much olr, as when he says, “People always thk somethg’s <em>all</em> te.” Although Holn thks lots of thgs are funny, he hasn’t much sense of humor; he has the adpan leralns and the all-or-nothg bativens of the passnate adolcent. Salger’s e of reeratn and rndancy Holn’s self-munn nveys this. After a passage scribg his schoolmate Robert Ackley as pimply, dirty, disgtg, and nasty, and as havg a terrible personaly, he tells you, “I wasn’t too crazy about him, to tell you the tth.” He had been to the movi, which he hat, wh this boy and another, and they both “lghed like hyenas at stuff that wasn’t even funny,” and then he tells you, after this harrowg experience, “I didn’t even enjoy stg next to them the movi.” The “even” is odd and characteristic. After a full nfsn about how he feels when Jane and Stradlater are out the r, he tells you, “I don’t even like to talk about , if you want to know the tth.” He is so aware of the danger of slippg to phons himself that he has to repeat over and over “I really mean ,” “It really do.” When he is not mung wh himself but is actual suatns, the reeratns disappear; the dialogue and the scriptns are enomil and lean.</p><p class="paywall">The leralns and nocence of Holn’s pot of view the face of the tremendoly plited and often praved facts of life make for the humor of this novel: ser haggl wh belligerent taxi-drivers; abortive nversatnal attempts wh a lanic prostute a hurry; an “tellectual” discsn wh a pompo and phony tellectual only a few years olr than himself; an expedn wh Sally Hay, which is one of the funnit expedns, surely, the history of juvenilia. Holn’s ntacts wh the outsi world are generally extremely funny. It is his self-mungs that are tragic and touchg—a dark whirlpool churng fiercely below the unflaggg hilary of his surface activi. Holn’s difficulti affect his nervo system but never his visn. It is the visn of an nocent. To the lifele of this visn he clgs vcibly, as he do to a phonograph rerd he buys for Phoebe (till breaks) and a red huntg p that is ar to him and that he fally giv to Phoebe, and to Allie’s baseball glove. He has a hunger for stabily. He lov the Mm of Natural History bee the figur the glass s don’t change; no matter how often you go, the Eskimo is still there tchg fish, the er drkg out of the water hole, the squaw weavg the same blanket. You change the circumstanc of your vis—you have an overat on one time when you didn’t before, or you may have “passed by one of those puddl the street wh gasole rabows them,” but the squaw and the er and the Eskimo are stable. (It was the reason Keats liked the spend attus of the figur on the Grecian urn.) Holn knows thgs won’t rema the same; they are dissolvg, and he nnot rencile himself to . He hasn’t the knowledge to trace the procs of dissolutn or the mental clary to fe ; all he knows is that he is gaspg the avalanche of distegratn around him. And yet there is an exhilaratn, an immense relief the fal scene of this novel, at the Central Park rroel wh Phoebe. (“I felt so damn happy all of a sudn, the way old Phoebe kept gog around and around.”) Holn will be all right. One day, he will probably fd himself the mood to ll up Jane. He will even bee more tolerant of phoni— is part of the mechanics of livg—as he has already had to endure the agony of sayg “Glad to’ve met you” to people he isn’t glad to have met. He may even, someday, wre a novel. I would like to read . I loved <em>this</em> one.
