One of the most popular and wily regnized female untry sgers of her era, Crystal Gayle supported her tramark, nearly floor-length hair wh a supple voice, a flair for ballads, and a crossover-iendly untry-pop style that ted her the ocsnal mastream h. Gayle was born Brenda Gail Webb Patsville, KY, 1951; her olr sister was future superstar Loretta Lynn, though Lynn had already left home by the time Brenda was born.

Lynn suggted the name Crystal, spired by the Krystal hamburger cha, and Brenda adopted her middle name to e up wh Crystal Gayle. Gayle's but sgle was 1970's "I've Cried (The Blu Right Out of My Ey)"; done a style very siar to Lynn's, reached the untry Top 40. Far om enuragg Gayle to velop her own style, Dec phed for more "ltle Loretta" rerds, and Lynn actually wrote some of her early sgl.

Reynolds offered Gayle the creative eedom she wanted, and she began to experiment wh her style and phrasg en route to her own distctive approach. Her first-ever album, tled simply Crystal Gayle, was released 1974, and the followg year she land her first Top Ten untry h, "Wrong Road Aga. Reynolds, feelg that Gayle was poised for a larger breakthrough, enuraged her to rerd the jazz-flavored pop ballad "Don't It Make My Brown Ey Blue, " which he felt sure had crossover potential.

He was right -- not only did the song h number one on the untry charts 1977, also climbed to number two on the pop si, garnered substantial ternatnal airplay, and won Gayle a Grammy for Bt Female Country Vol. Now a bona fi star, Gayle followed her breakthrough succs wh a strg of hs that lasted for approximately the next .

Gayle h number one three tim 1983 ("Baby, What About You, " Rodney Crowell's "Till I Ga Control Aga, " "Our Love Is on the Fltle") and twice more 1984 ("The Sound of Goodbye, " "Turng Away"), and began to cross over to the adult ntemporary charts wh regulary as well.

Gayle's last untry number on me 1986 wh "Cry" and the smooth Gary Morris duet "Mak' Up for Lost Time, " after which she -- rather abptly -- all but disappeared om the charts.

She rerd two gospel albums durg the '90s, Someday and He Is Betiful, and 1999 pleted a tribute project, Crystal Gayle Sgs the Heart & Soul of Hoagy Carmichael.
