The actor, who has a background theatre and has had recurrg rol on both <em>Altered Carbon</em> and <em>The Gay and Wondro Life of Caleb Gallo</em>, is a risg star to watch.</p><p>As a queer actor <a href=">myself</a>, I was thrilled at the prospect of talkg wh Marziale about his experienc Hollywood. Sometim you read somethg and you’re like, I want to be a piece of this puzzle bee I feel like this story is really, really important and I’m very passnate about . And when <em>that</em> happens to me (which don’t happen that often), really feels like magic. When that happens, I feel part of somethg greater than myself, and I feel grateful for . I feel like my character, Ellt, had a history. It’s a light, well nstcted, fun movie — there wasn’t any trma scene or gay-bashg scene or anythg like that. And I feel like that’s really hard to fd. I really enjoyed that ’s goofy and particular to self, while also beg LGBT.</p><p> </p><p><strong>As a queer actor, did you rporate any of your personal experienc while portrayg Ellt?</strong></p><p>It felt like an emotnal movie for me, bee felt like a movie that if I had seen when I was young, would have really spired me. And I thk that bee of that, I felt very protective over Ellt. I feel like there was a part of me that was him. Even though I was actg, I fely felt very nnected to him. You don’t belong here!”</p><p> </p><p><strong>What’s your opn on queer reprentatn Hollywood today? Do you feel like we’re makg progrs wh movi like <em>Alex Strangelove</em> and shows like <a href="><em>Rise</em></a>?</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Margalized people are sort of expected to be the reprentative voic of a group, and that isn’t asked of people who aren’t part of a margalized group. There’s this add prsure to be the voice of a muny. I feel like ’s a tricky nversatn, bee at the same time, reprentatn <em>is</em> important and we <em>should</em> be vol about how we feel about thgs. But at the same time, why is somethg beg asked of that isn’t beg asked of other people?</p><p>As a margalized actor, you want to be vol for your muny but you also don’t want to be tokenized. You’re left sort of ozen. I don’t want to be ed for that. I don’t want to e to a project wh people expectg that I’m gog to be vol about . If I choose to be, then that’s my cisn.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Yeah, that was somethg I faced when I was dog prs for <em>Rise</em>. Everythg was about me beg nonbary and Michael beg a trans boy. I did talk about my inty and I felt happy and fortable talkg about , but I always ma sure the first thg out of my mouth was not about my inty, so that people knew that first and foremost I am a person and an actor, and my genr inty is send to who I am.</strong></p><p>Yeah, also film and TV have such a powerful abily for people to hear om and see people who they wouldn’t ually see. And that’s the power of cema, right? But maybe that’s the job of the movie, and not the job of the actor.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Somethg I really appreciate about <em>Alex Strangelove</em> is s difference om what we see wh other reprentatns of gay relatnships and csh. I feel like what most films and TV shows do is make LGBTQ+ characters and queer relatnships otherworldly and not relatable. It always felt like if we ever had any qutns or anythg, we uld brg up to our director, Craig Johnson. I’m not a wrer, but yeah, I feel like Craig was very sensive to our thoughts.</p><p>We all e to nversatns — whether or not we’re aware of — wh all of the filters before we speak. Like if we’re cisgenr, if we’re mascule, if we’re straight, whatever is — whenever we speak, our thoughts and perspectiv get filtered through all of those lens before they ex our mouth. When people make stori about trans or nonbary people whout cludg any people om those muni or of those experienc, they’re gog to approach those stori wh all of their own bias.</p><p> </p><p><strong>What are your goals terms of actg? What kd of rol would you like to play the future?</strong></p><p>I want to be part of stori that mean somethg to me, stori that I thk are important to be told. That’s kd of . When trite, well-round characters wh cur patterns of behavr e my way, I get really exced by them. I love really creatg a character, a backstory, and really igng my imagatn. Those typ of rol are the on that really get me gog and make me feel like I’m beg challenged.
