The latter ia is closer to what directors Myl Kane and Josh Koury got out of <em>Voyr,</em> which begs as a return to the spotlight for Tale, who visibly brims wh excement and speratn for rurgent relevance at 81, and ends as a nfed, regrettable illtratn of two men’s unstoppable egos. The same impulse is shared by the entire “Voyr” project—the article, book, and documentary—which tras so heavily on lurid tails (which aren’t even that lurid) that giv up any artistic or tellectual center. Not once the film do anyone, edors clud, ever show ncern for those who stayed Foos’s motel, who were watched and rerd whout their nsent. A few mentns of the fact that most people who stayed the motel are likely ad (qutnable, given that Foos is still alive) serve to amelrate any guilt or regret. That word, <em>nsent</em>, is pecially charged now, a time where powerful men om the very dtri that <em>Voyr</em> is ncerned wh—journalism, publishg, and film—<a href=">have been rocked</a> by accatns of not knowg or rg to thk about what exactly that word means. That Foos’s s-long misnduct is exced by the disputable fact that is “fascatg” marks the film’s tonal dissonance. This is no time for old perverts.</p><p>And yet the methods by which the documentarians exce are hallmarks of a media genre that is very much of-the-zegeist: <a href=">te crime</a>. Kane and Koury employ the qutsential background stments of the genre, the <em>Serial</em>-que xylophone and harp, to make scen plucky and quirky, if creepy, but never edgg to outright disturbg. And the adorable mol of the motel they e to show how Foos spied on his ctomers is a twee reprentatn of what was sentially a crime scene. The level of meta-storytellg they attempt to tell lv to all the most superficial rners, like watchg Tale’s dghter, an artist, pat Foos’s motel for her father’s book; Tale and Foos, when they first meet 2013, stay at a motel, se you didn’t know what they’re gettg at here.</p><p>Anyone faiar wh Gay Tale’s brand of lerary journalism, which has bee a fg style, is likely faiar wh another pneer, Ja Mallm, who said this of her chosen genre, bgraphy: “The voyrism and bybodyism that impel wrers and rears of bgraphy alike are obscured by an apparat of scholarship signed to give the enterprise an appearance of bank-like blandns and solidy.” Nowadays we n replace “apparat of scholarship” wh “apparat of televisn,” the most prolific mo of te-crime storytellg, and the pfalls of which <em>Voyr</em> illtrat. There’s such a huge drive for ntent now that our bast stcts n be fed not only quickly and efficiently, but wh the trappgs of prtige and tellectualism. Y, ’s paful to scroll through reboot after reboot of ’90s televisn shows, or artful miseri, but te-crime packag the liv of real people for nsumptn. It mak the qutn of what kds of stori, and which storytellers, we’re rewardg—and y, ’s rewardg when money is volved—all the more imperative to reckon wh.</p></div></div></div><div
