(Courty Jeff Freedman) The Renegas, an LGBTQ softball team, celebrat wng the Salt Lake County Recreatnal League -ed divisn champnship 1996 — a gay team a straight league, and a symbol of empowerment for Utah's LGBTQ NCAA softball Super Regnals, thanks to the wng ways of the Utah Ut’ team, will be played this weekend Salt Lake Cy for the first time ever — and ’s not the only softball tournament makg s but North Ameri Gay Amatr Athletic Associatn (NAGAAA) will stage s softball tournament Saturday and Sunday Salt Lake Cy, wh some 700 people om 35 teams playg for the NAGAAA ’s a substantial turnout, said Mark Sakalar, the nonprof sports anizatn’s athletic director — particularly bee Salt Lake Cy isn’t a member cy of the NAGAAA, which reprents 54 cy leagu and has some 19, 000 members.
He also talked wh Jeff Freedman, who has a historic tie to gay softball Utah. Freedman claims to have brought gay softball to Utah the early 1990s — and brgg the NAGAAA Cup to Utah s later is excg. He grew up Ptsburgh, and played a gay softball league there his early 20s — which meant a lot back the day.
“Back the ‘80s, ” he said, “we didn’t have a lot of optns for the LGBTQ muny out there, and pecially wh gay sports.

” When Freedman moved om Ptsburgh to Mneapolis, he joed a league Freedman moved to Salt Lake Cy 1990 for a job, he found there wasn’t a gay league he uld jo. Instead he started a gay softball team, wh men and women playg, a straight league Salt Lake County.
)Though public support for lbians and gay men doubled between 1977 and 2014, acrdg to a 2014 report om UCLA’s law school, today LGBTQ+ acceptance has been unr attack across the untry — and some ways, Freedman said, do feel like ja vu. When the Renegas started wng, a rival team’s outfielr once threw the ball over the backstop, Freedman said, and yelled, “I n’t believe we’re gettg beat by a bunch of f---g…” and end the sentence wh an anti-gay slur. “We get, om the other si, looks, sayg, ‘Well, this is what a homosexual looks like, ’” he said.
